Assuming you were on medicare and you pass on who receives your death benefit? Does it go to your spouse assuming they are still alive or does it go to your estate to help pay exspenses?

From my understanding, any benefits will go directly to any outstanding medical bills such as hospital or doctor bills for your final illness unless these have already been paid. At that point benefits go to the estate which would be the spouse if still living.

What if you don't have a spouse? Do any benefits go to the estate if the medical bills have been paid? I just wondered because my daughter is the executor of my estate.

I was under the impression that the money goes to the funeral home to help with your funeral. It's a pretty small amount but anything helps when you don't have any life insurance at all. You could ask your funeral director (the funeral home you will be using in the future) about this and they could give you a good idea how things work with this.
