I know that some things can cost you more if you wait to enroll. Is that the case with prescription drug plans, as well? My sister just turned 65 and she doesn't take any medications regularly as she's in perfect health. She may need an antibiotic every three years but that's about it and it's been that way for years. She was thinking of waiting on joining one of these but she asked me if there would be a penalty for waiting and I'm not sure?

Each plan can vary in cost and drugs covered. If you decide not to join a Medicare drug plan when you are first eligible, you may pay a late-enrollment penalty if you choose to join later.

Based on my research, if one doesn't enroll in a Part D plan when first eligible for Medicare (usually at age 65) but decides to join a plan later, he/she will pay a penalty of 1 percent per month on the premiums for every month delayed. This higher premium cost applies to any plan he/she enrolls in, and it's permanent.
