Are psychiatric drugs such as antidepressants or antipsychotic drugs covered under medicare or are they excluded?

I can't tell you that they are in every circumstance but they were covered for the residents of the assisted living facility that I used to work at. The residents between them took just about every psychotropic drug imaginable for the various mental illnesses that they had. As long as you have a psychiatrist making the diagnosis and prescribing the medications, there shouldn't be an issue.

Many of them are covered but you have to check with you Part D provider to see what tier they are covered on. Most generic drugs are covered under tier 1 which is the tier you pay the least copay for. Most or all of the name brand drugs are covered in the tier 2 or tier 3 coverage and plans charge differently for these. You pretty much have to check with your plan to see what they will do for the different drugs. If your drug is a name brand and is covered under the upper two tiers, ask your doctor or pharmacist if there is a generic available for that drug. Many times, if it is an older drug there is a generic out and you can get it cheaper.

Medicare pays for only 7 percent of mental health and substance abuse spending, compared with 17 percent of overall health care spending.

High cost sharing for outpatient mental health benefits in Medicare likely limited access to treatment for some beneficiaries with mental illnesses

There are many types of anti-depressants out there so if you run across one, usually your doctor can find another that he can get prescribed that will be covered. Most doctors are well versed with this sort of thing, if you doctor is not, maybe it's time to start shopping around.

If your doctor isn't well versed, go talk with a pharmacist! They are more likely than doctors to know about medications, beyond the information provided in the box!
