This last year I was in the hospital for a short time and the doctor ordered a test that Medicare doesn't cover. I didn't know it at the time since I was so sick and didn't have an opportunity to refuse the test. How do I protest the charge since I had no choice but to do the test since I wasn't able to protest it. Does anyone know what to do?

You may be able to show proof that the test was medically necessary but it would depend on what the test is, of course. What kind of test was it? Depending on circumstances, you may be able to get it covered under some part of Medicare. If not, there is often a program through the hospitals to get the test covered or at least reduce the charges.

I think that's one of the most common complaints. The doctors don't know what is covered for the most part and will order what they think is necessary. I know I usually just wind up making payments on things that aren't covered.

Get in touch with one of the Medicare Ombudsmen at 1-800-Medicare. They will be able to tell you the appeals process and guide you through it. You can also go to the Medicare website and find the information easily. There is a process for appealing disallowed charges.

First I would contact the hospital's billing department and dispute the charge with them. If they are unwilling to help you and the test was medically necessary you can always contact Medicare and ask them if they will cover the charge.

Many times there are things that will not be covered, even though they should be, due to a medical coding error. If the medical facility does not fill out there paperwork correctly, sometimes this can become an issue.
