Once one is approved for Medicare, are there other benefits that come along with it?

If a spouse is a caretaker, do they get a stipend because they have to be available for things like transportation to doctor's appointments or have to do most of the household tasks?

No, the spouse will not get a stipend and transportation costs are not generally covered by Medicare. It won't even pay for someone to come in and help with household cleaning and tasks when you are eligible for home health care services. There are usually local agencies that can assist with transportation needs for the elderly or disabled.

Actually, if you are getting home health aide services along with other therapies from your home health agency, Medicare will cover the aide services (which includes bathing, dressing, etc.) on a part-time or intermittent basis.

If it's the spouse doing the caring, however, I don't think there'd be a stipend.

Do you have to use specific medicare approved home health agencies or can you just pick one out of the yellow pages? Also are there limits to how much home health help you can have? Would it cover having an aide for 24 hrs in a day?

I thought these tasks were considered to be custodial care, and is not paid for by Medicare?

It has to be medicare-certified :)

I still say that custodial care is not covered by Medicare.

Actually, Sheyanne, Medicare currently covers home health care services if your doctor approves it, and you need it, and yup, you're working with medicare-certified agencies, and you're homebound (can't leave home without help)

But for home health aide services, it has to be on a part-time basis, which means that you can't have a 24-hour staff employed. Even counselling and support groups are covered, wheelchairs and walkers and some drugs are covered.
