My doctor had me take a bone density scan recently. Later I found out that Medicare will not be covering the test and it is very expensive. I was under the impression that bone density scans were coverable so I don't understand why they would deny it.

Bone density scans are covered but not in every case. You have to have some risk factor or diagnosis that would require it like osteopenia or osteoporosis. I'm sure there are other times too but those are the ones that come to mind.

If you had cause to have a scan it would suggest some risk factors. You could try contacting your health care provider and finding out why you were referred for this, and then appeal the decision on that basis.

I had something similar to this happen, which taught me a lesson.

I never tell a doctor I will have any tests until I have checked with the insurance provider!

Absolutely check with your insurance provider or the doctor's billing service to see if the insurance you have will cover a procedure or a test. I learned this lesson well too, to many times to count. I have spent a lot of money paying for these mistakes.
