Next year, we are planning to have two vacations outside of the United States. The first is a cruise in April that was a gift to us. We'll be in the Caribbeans for ten glorious days. The second will be in June when we're going to Canada for a family wedding and reunion for three weeks. What happens if we get sick or hurt while we are traveling?

I don't know about when you go to Canada but medically necessary services on a cruise ship are covered, at least in certain circumstances. You probably should contact your local social security office to get all of the particulars.

The cost of supplemental travel insurance is not too high, and it offers way more services and coverage than medicare would. Lost luggage for instance, or cancelled trips-you could get paid for hotels you have to stay in whilst waiting for delayed flights.

Either way it is worth looking into the peace of mind of other insurance too.

I would definitely check up on what your insurance covers and compare that to your traveler's insurance.

Even if you are covered by both plans, there may be some little loopholes that could leave you with high medical bills.

I never thought of travel insurance. I didn't know that would cover medical care. I was under the impression it was more for canceled flights or lost luggage issues but I will certainly ask about medical care.

You should be covered to go to any doctor or hospital in any state or U.S. territory. If you are enrolled in a Medicare private health plan, like an HMO or PPO, you have to follow your plan’s rules. Private health plans sometimes restrict you to their doctors and hospitals so it's best to check with your plan.
