I visited my cousin last night in the Hospital. She's currently suffering heart ailments. I heard that it's very necessary for my cousin to be transferred to another hospital because it's more advanced in medical facilities. Does medicare cover the ambulance trip?

Yes. You don't have to worry about the cost of the ambulance trip. Medicare does make provision in it's plan for ambulance services, whether it is from home or from site to site transportation. Just be there for your cousin and I wish you both well.

Hmmn... you might want to take a raincheck on that advice. The rule of thumb is usually that bed confinement is not sufficient for ambulance coverage. The patient's condition has to warrant ambulance transport. This means if your cousin may be transported by car or other modes, then your ambulance expenses are not covered.

Medicare will only cover ambulance services to the nearest appropriate medical facility that is able to give you the care you need.

If you choose to be transported to a facility farther away, Medicare’s payment will be based on the charge to the closest appropriate facility.
