I know that in some circumstances, such as cancer, you can get medicare coverage at a much younger age. But what about children-severely handicapped perhaps-do they get coverage through medicare?

I'm not sure in all cases but a friend of mine has a daughter who has spinal bifida. She gets SSI for her and Medicaid, not Medicare and SSD. I'm not sure that Medicare applies if a person hasn't worked enough quarters to qualify for social security.

You would have to check with social security but generally disabled children are eligible for SSI and medicaid. I don't believe they would qualify for Medicare but again this is something you would have to check with.
